Art fairs and craft markets look fun. They can also quietly lose you money. Before you pay that booth fee, run the numbers.
This article is part of our Artist's Business Playbook — the complete guide to the business side of your art.
The true cost of a market day
It's not just the booth fee. Add it all up:
- Booth/table fee: $50-$300
- Application or jury fee: $0-$50
- Travel and parking: $20-$100
- Food: $20-$40 (you're there all day)
- Display materials: amortize your tent, tablecloth, signage across events
A "cheap" $75 booth often costs $200+ all-in. A $250 juried fair can cost $400+.
The break-even formula
Break-even units = Total booth cost / (Average sale price - Cost per unit)
Example: $200 total cost, $25 average price, $4 cost per unit. Break-even = 200 / 21 = ~10 units. You need to sell 10 pieces just to not lose money. Everything after that is profit.
If you can't realistically sell 2x your break-even number, skip that market.
Picking the right markets
High-traffic ≠ high-sales. A busy downtown festival with looky-loos converts worse than a small curated craft fair with buyers. Ask vendors from last year: "Did you make money?"
Match your price point. Don't sell $200 originals at a $5-craft market. Don't sell $10 stickers at a fine art fair. The audience has to match the product.
Track everything. After each market, record: revenue, costs, profit, foot traffic quality. After 3-4 markets you'll know exactly which ones are worth repeating.
The inventory question
Bring enough to look abundant but not so much you're hauling unsold stock home. A good rule: bring 3x what you hope to sell. If your target is 20 sales, bring 60 pieces across price points.
Always have a low-price entry item ($5-$15). It captures browsers who won't commit to $50 but will impulse-buy a sticker or card.
FAQ
How do I get into juried art fairs?
Apply early, submit your best 5-10 images (not 20 mediocre ones), and write a clear artist statement. Jurors decide in seconds.
Should I take card payments?
Yes. Cash-only vendors lose 30-40% of potential sales. Square or Stripe reader, no excuses.
What if it rains?
Have a rain plan: tent weights, waterproof covers, and a "rainy day" price list (indoor-friendly items). Outdoor markets without a rain plan are gambling.
